Though they’ve kept relatively quiet since Paris, it sounds like someone inside LVMH is finally whispering about the Dior situation.
An article in WWD this morning confirms rumors that the in-house design team is hard at work on both cruise and couture collections while the executives are busy fielding suggestions from left and right regarding John Galliano’s successor. For now, the consultants to whom Bernard Arnault is actually paying attention have suggested the following: Tom Ford, Hedi Slimane, Olivier Theyskens, Nicholas Ghesquière, Alber Elbaz, Haider Ackermann, Prabal Gurung and Sarah Burton. Also, of course, Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci who they suggest is actually campaigning for the job (and is a favorite of Arnault’s daughter Delphine). Some of those names are shocking: Ford’s just embarked on an incredibly personal journey toward building his own empire; it’s terrifying to imagine Balenciaga without Ghesquière and though no one doubts Gurung’s talent, he’s by far the youngest—and least experienced—name.
Whoever’s talking also suggests that if Burton does in fact provide Kate Middleton’s dress for next week’s wedding she’ll have a leg up on the competition, though Arnault’s “obsession” with royalty sounds like a pretty weak argument. Out of this bunch, who do you think has the best shot?
